Botany Bay is an SCDNR Wildlife Management Area and Heritage Preserve, located on Edisto Island. Students will explore and learn about its unique ecosystems as we walk across this barrier island to the beachfront.
Children will need a chaperone to drive to and from Botany Bay as well as attend the event.
Program: Barrier Island Field Study (Rising 1st-6th graders)
Policies - Botany Bay Plantation is a Wildlife Management Area with the main priority of provide habitat for plants and animals.
There are no bathrooms on the property. You will have to stop for a restroom break BEFORE you get to Botany Bay. There is an En Market gas station about 14 miles after you turn onto Hwy 174 off Hwy 17 where you can stop before you reach Botany Bay Rd. or go to the Edisto Learning Center about 15 minutes away.
Programs are conducted entirely outdoors, there are no indoor facilities. If inclement weather looks probable, we will reschedule.
There are no food or drinks available at Botany Bay, not even water. Please bring enough water for the entire day.
The trail to the beach is gravel and approximately ½ mile walk one way.
Where to Meet - Please have your cars meet our staff at the trailer parking area, 1 mile pass the front gate of Botany Bay Plantation WMA (Botany Bay Rd. Edisto Island, SC 29438)
What to Bring
Everyone in the group must wear CLOSED TOED SHOES.
Bring a reusable water bottle to reduce the disposable packaging.
We do not have trash disposals, groups must remove their own trash.
Sunscreen and bug spray are recommended and should be applied before the program.
